Geranium purpureum is very similar to Geranium robertianum, and grows in similarly disturbed habitats; it is found in southern coastal regions in the British Isles, but is spreading along railways in central Europe.

Geranium purpureum subsp. forsteri is a prostrate form endemic to the coast of Hampshire and possibly Sussex.
