As a tree, Ulmus procera was decimated by Dutch Elm Disease, but it still occurs widely as a component of hedgerows.

The fruit of elms is a flat, round samara with a tiny seed in the centre. Ulmus procera differs from the other common elm tree, Ulmus glabra, in lacking brown hairs on the buds.
