Frangula alnus grows in bogs and scrub, and is common only in parts of southern England, although it occurs throughout most of England and Wales and in central Ireland.

The flowers of Frangula alnus are small, white and 5-parted with triangular petals, rather reminiscent of those of Thesium humifusum.
