Papaver cambricum is native to parts of Ireland, Wales and south-western England, but is very widely encountered as a garden escape; it and Glaucium flavum are our only native poppies.

The flowers of Papaver cambricum are yellow or orange; the stigma is divided into 4–6 lobes, but is not flattened like other Papaver species.

The capsules of Papaver cambricum open by means of 4–6 triangular flaps near the tip, in contrast to the squarish pores that open up in the fruits of Papaver species.
