The bowl-shaped flowers of Nuphar lutea have up to 7 large yellow sepals, up to 25 (smaller) petals, up to 25 stigmatic lobes and up to 200 stamens.

The leaves of Nuphar lutea have 23–28 side-veins on each half of the leaf; most of the leaves lie flat on the water’s surface, but even when held aloft, the basal sinus is narrow.
