Juniperus communis subsp. communis is, unlike the other subspecies, typically an upright tree; it grows on calcareous downs in southern England, but on rocky moorland and coasts in North Wales, northern England, Scotland and Ireland.

The leaves of Juniperus communis subsp. communis are patent and acuminate with a greyish stomatal band.
