Melilotus altissimus is a tall herb with small yellow pea-like flowers in which the keel petal is about as long as the wings (in Melilotus officinalis, the keel is shorter).

Melilotus altissimus differs from Melilotus officinalis in having pods that are hairy, black and 2-seeded, rather than glabrous, brown and 1-seeded.
