Rosa squarrosa differs from Rosa canina s.s. in that its leaves are biserrate or multiserrate, with glands on the tips of the teeth.

As in Rosa canina s.s., the sepals are pinnately lobed, soon becoming reflexed, and generally falling off by the time the fruit is ripe.
