Dryopteris dilatata is common throughout the British Isles; the pinnules of its lowest pinnae are usually much longer on the proximal than the distal side.

The slightly down-curved pinnules separate Dryopteris dilatata from the rarer montane species Dryopteris expansa, which has flat pinnules.
