Dryopteris oreades is a fern that grows in rock crevices and on scree in Wales, northern England, Scotland and a few sites in Ireland.

The pinnules of Dryopteris oreades have marginal teeth that point outwards at the pinnule tip, unlike Dryopteris filix-mas, where the teeth tend to all point forwards.

 mountain male-fern / Dryopteris oreades: The pinnules of _Dryopteris oreades_ have marginal teeth that point outwards at the pinnule tip, unlike _Dryopteris filix-mas_, where the teeth tend to all point forwards.

At the base of the stem, Dryopteris oreades has numerous pale brown scales.
