Woodsia ilvensis has hairier leaves than its slightly more abundant congener, Woodsia alpina, which has few hairs on the upper surface.

The sori of Woodsia ilvensis are arranged around the margin of each pinnule segment; the indusium quickly breaks up into threads, forming a fringe around the sorus.
