Trichomanes speciosum is extremely rare as a sporophyte, growing on very wet – and often inaccessible – rocks in south-western Ireland and perhaps elsewhere.

The gametophyte of Trichomanes speciosum is an inconspicuous mat of green threads, and was only recognised in the wild in the late 1990s.
