Agrostis vinealis is very similar to Agrostis canina, but it has a more compact inflorescence and forms compact tufts connected by rhizomes rather than forming a mat connected by stolons.

The ligules of Agrostis vinealis are longer than those of Agrostis capillaris, but not quite as long as those of Agrostis canina.
