At least the lowest utricles have their long beaks flexed backwards, like Carex flava; the other yellow sedges (Carex viridula and Carex demissa) have utricle-beaks shorter than 1.5 mm.

Carex lepidocarpa grows only in base-rich wetlands, and is rather sparsely distributed in Wales and southern and central England.
