In Carex divulsa subsp. divulsa, the more widespread subspecies, the lowest spikes are widely spaced and the ripe fruit remain appressed to the spikelet axis.

In Carex divulsa subsp. leersi, which is more restricted to chalk and limestone, the lowest spikes are closer together and the ripe fruit spreads out from the spikelet axis.
