Carex divulsa grows in woodland edges and roadsides, mostly in southern England, southern Ireland and eastern Wales.

In Carex divulsa subsp. divulsa, the more widespread subspecies, the lowest spikes are widely spaced and the ripe fruit remain appressed to the spikelet axis.
