Pictorial guide to the flora of the British Isles
Carex otrubae is a common sedge of wet places on clay-rich soils; in the north and west, it is mostly coastal, but occurs almost throughout central and southern England.

The thick, acutely triangular stems and long bract(s) at the base of the inflorescence separate Carex otrubae from almost all others at a distance; Carex vulpina differs only subtly but is much rarer.
