Eriophorum latifolium is rarer than Eriophorum angustifolium and usually grows in less acidic places; its stems are bluntly triangular with a close-fitting upper leaf sheath, and its leaves are flat with only a short pyramidal tip.

In Eriophorum latifolium, the pedicels are minutely rough and the glumes are long (>6 mm) with a narrow scarious margin, in contrast with Eriophorum angustifolium.
