The oddly shaped, tapering fruits are characteristic of Luzula pilosa. The similar Luzula forsteri has ovoid capsules with much longer apical points.

The tepals of Luzula pilosa are less finely pointed than those of Luzula forsteri; the lowest flower-stalks in the inflorescence are usually bent backwards.
