Epipactis atrorubens grows on bare limestone at sites in North Wales, northern England, northern Scotland and mid-western Ireland.

As well as the stem, the ovaries of Epipactis atrorubens are hairy; the flowers are usually deep purple, with a broad end to the labellum.
