Alisma lanceolatum grows in shallow, base-rich water in central and southern England, and more rarely in Wales, Scotland and Ireland; its leaves are cuneate at the base, unlike the rounded to cordate leaves of Alisma plantago-aquatica.

The inflorescences of Alisma lanceolatum are almost identical to those of the more common Alisma plantago-aquatica.
