Ligusticum scoticum is a coastal species that occurs almost exclusively north of the Scottish border, as well as along the north coast of Ireland, on rocky or sandy substrates.

The leaves of Ligusticum scoticum are up to twice ternate, with broad, fleshy, serrate leaflets; the nodes of the stems and leaves are often flushed with pinky red.

The inflorescences of Ligusticum scoticum have a few bracts and bracteoles, all of which are very narrow.

The fruits of Ligusticum scoticum are relatively long, with bulging longitudinal ridges and persistent sepals at the apex.
