Two subspecies are present in the British Isles: A. major subsp. major has bracteoles barely longer than the flowers, at up to 15 mm long, and is the less frequently seen here.

The second subspecies, A. major subsp. involucrata (= subsp. carinthiaca), has bracteoles distinctly longer than the flowers, at up to 22 mm long; it is the more frequent in the British Isles.
