Hypochaeris maculata is a rare perennial herb that grows in coastal heaths over calcareous rock in West Cornwall (VC1: West Cornwall & Scillies) and the Great Orme (VC49: Caernarvonshire) and in chalk downland in eastern England.

The phyllaries of Hypochaeris maculata are much hairier than in its congeners, and its leaves are generally marked with purple blotches.
