Scrophularia umbrosa grows on river-banks in East Anglia, along the Severn, Teme and Corve, the Aire, Wharfe and Ribble, the Eden, the Tweed and its tributaries, the Liffey and a few other sites.

The stems of Scrophularia umbrosa have even broader wings than Scrophularia auriculata, but the leaves are serrate, not crenate, and at least the lower ones are cuneate.

The flowers of Scrophularia umbrosa have the same broad scarious sepal-margins as Scrophularia auriculata, but differ in that the staminode has 2 lobes.
