Veronica hederifolia can be recognised by the cordate bases to the sepals; two morphologically overlapping but cytologically distinct subspecies can be recognised.

The tetraploid Veronica hederifolia subsp. lucorum has long fruiting pedicels; the apical leaf-lobe is also longer than in V. hederifolia subsp. hederifolia.
