Veronica anagallis-aquatica grows in shallow water or waterlogged ground and has pale blue (or white) flowers with pink marks on the veins; those of the ecologically and morphologically similar Veronica catenata are more broadly pink.

When ripe, the fruits of Veronica anagallis-aquatica are swollen with a sucker-like protrusion, rather than flattened with a cleft at the tip as in Veronica catenata and other Veronica species.
