Subularia aquatica grows in shallow montane lakes in Scotland, the Lake District, West Wales and western Ireland; its leaves are all basal and subulate, like those of Isoetes or Littorella uniflora.

Subularia aquatica is self-compatible and flowers underwater, and so can come to carpet large areas.
